Salary/Benefits
Salary: Brea Police Officers earn a salary within the following range: $5,156 - $6,601/month. Police Officers can also earn additional pay of up to 23%, depending on assignments and P.O.S.T. certifications.

The City of Brea offers a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including:

PERS 3% @ 50 Retirement: This plan offers the highest retirement benefits available for agencies that contract with PERS. Brea was one of the first cities in California to provide this retirement plan for its sworn employees.

Flexible Benefit Plan: Brea Police Officers and Sergeants are provided a non-taxable flexible benefit contribution, which may be used toward medical insurance, dental insurance, optical insurance, short-term disability, and optional life insurance. The City currently participates in the PERS Medical Plan, which includes a variety of Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO’s) and Health Management Organizations (HMO’s). In addition, the City offers three dental programs for employees and their dependents. Finally, upon retirement the City will contribute toward retiree medical insurance.

Whatever flex plan monies you do not use may be placed in a deferred compensation plan which can serve as a supplemental retirement plan or converted to taxable cash. There are several employees who have medical coverage provided through their spouse or through other means. These employees are able to deposit monthly flex plan contributions into their deferred compensation plan, or convert it to taxable cash. Many others purchase their medical insurance and/or other insurance through the City, but still have funds left over which can be deposited in their deferred compensation account or received as taxable cash. The flex plan monies can also be used toward the City’s college-level educational reimbursement program. Please see the Brea Police Association MOU on this website for amounts and details on how this works.

Educational Reimbursement: While flex plan money can be used for educational reimbursement, most employees attending college find that the City’s educational reimbursement plan covers their costs adequately. Police personnel can receive up to $2,500 per year to help them attain a bachelor’s or master’s degree. This money can be used for tuition, registration, books, parking, and other college-related fees. Police personnel enrolled in more costly short-term accelerated degree programs, which have large initial expenses, may be eligible to recover their initial expenses over time. With this option you could receive up to $2,500 per year, for four years.

Assignment Pay: Police personnel serving in special assignments such as Motors, K-9 Handler, Retail Crime Team, School Resource Officer, and Investigation receive an additional 5% bonus for performing these duties. The City also offers this 5% special assignment pay for those officers who return to patrol, after serving in an assignment for the minimum commitment period. With the combination of an assignment while serving as a Corporal, it is possible to earn up to total of 10% in additional pay.

Bilingual Pay: Officers who are bilingual in a language designated by the City’s Personnel Officer, can earn an additional $200 per month for the first language, and $25 per month for each additional language.

Uniform Allowance: As a sworn employee, you will receive $750 per year for uniform purchase and maintenance. New hires receive $850 their first year.

Vacation. You will earn vacation leave at the following rates:

Following Vacation Accrual
Initial Hire 80 hours/year
3 Years 120 hours/year
7 Years 140 hours/year
13 Years 160 hours/year
16 Years 175 hours/year
19 Years 200 hours/year

Holidays: Shift employees earn 108 hours of holiday pay per year. Non-shift employees receive eleven holidays per year.

Sick Leave: You will earn eight hours of sick leave per month. You may also use sick leave for personal medical and/or dental appointments. Up to 48 hours per year of your sick leave accrual may be used for assisting immediate family members with their medical and/or dental needs.

Wellness: Cardiovascular and Strength Training Programs: In an effort to support fitness and health, the City of Brea will provide you with $450 per year for preventive and diagnostic heart, stroke and body scanning, and cardiovascular and strength training. This money may be used for health club memberships and a portion may be used to purchase home exercise equipment.

Other Benefits: The City of Brea also provides each employee with a $50,000 term life insurance policy, Long Term Disability insurance and participates in an IRS Section 125 program, and offers you an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which is designed to help you and your family members with confidential emotional, financial, and legal assistance.

Beyond the benefits listed above, there is a certain intangible benefit that comes with joining the Brea team.
