K-9
For many years, the Brea Police Department has benefited from the services of Police Service Dogs, or K-9s. Currently, the department has two, uniformed K-9 handlers. Our handlers work within the Patrol division assigned to Patrol Teams to assist with special needs, such as Building and People Searches, Narcotics Searches and Crowd Control. They also display the skills of the dogs at community events and schools.
K-9 handlers receive many hours of training with their dog. The dog lives with the handler and his/her family, and the handler also enjoys the use of a take-home patrol vehicle. Often, the dog remains with the handler after the dog’s retirement, or when the handler moves on to another position within the department.
